A complex new build and refurbishment delivered on time and within budget.
Abacus was involved in the construction of a new 32,300 sq ft building at Stockport College, which includes a new main reception, general teaching spaces, central services, a learning resource centre (LRC), science laboratories, and hair and beauty.
The Stockport College project was divided into two phases. In phase one, Abacus provided project management and employer’s agent services on this refurbishment and partial new build. The project introduced a late change in the form of the refurbishment of an adjacent building. Abacus managed the design and negotiation with the contractor with the overall summer completion target still achieved.
Initially designed to be a refurbishment project, phase two faced significant cost challenges due to the condition of the existing building. Abacus undertook a comprehensive review of options and recommended a new build solution on a different part of the campus. This alternative approach was delivered within budget and provided bespoke accommodation tailored to the college’s needs. Abacus acted as project manager and employer’s agent for the successful delivery of this phase.
